About Me

Welcome to my blog. It’s a place where I share my thoughts, opinions and snapshots with the wider world.

Enjoying an amazing beach day back home in Oz... was the move to London the right choice?

At home on the Gold Coast, Australia.

I’m an environmental scientist and communicator. I’m passionate about science. It makes sense of the world around us, and has radically shaped the course of human history in the past 500 years. And I love exploring the world: the wilder, the better. I have a hunger to learn new things about myself and the world I live in, and want everyone to have the opportunity to do this too.

While I enjoyed research, especially the bits where I had to wander around in swamps and survey sand dunes, I found the lab bench confining. In my spare days I took school groups out to study local waterways with Waterwatch, and found Green Steps (and my ongoing role as a trainer) and involvement with the AYCC so enjoyable that I decided to turn my enthusiasm into my livelihood. In 2010 I moved to London to complete a Master of Science in Science Communication at Imperial College London.

I then took on a job in the Science Museum, program managing the experimental Lottolab, which produced the first ever peer-reviewed manuscript by a class of school kids (it starts “Once upon a time…“). I found myself running a neuroscience nightclub and managing an ‘open lab’ which brought Museum visitors into the thick of real experiments. I then moved into the Contemporary Science team, where I develop updates for the galleries, run huge events and get to find out and share jaw-dropping stuff every day.

A picture of a teenager taking part in a blindfolded experiment at the Science Museum.

An ‘i, scientist’ experiment, created by young people who were posed the question “How do you find your way?”, in action at Lottolab.

You blog?! I am so adding you to my blog roll. =)
Love those pics, by the way. You didn’t take them did you? I’m highly impressed if you did. I wish I had that kind of talent.
Anywho, see you in lab and whatnot.
    Cheers.

Hey, the pics in my blog posts are mine unless otherwise noted – I’m pretty into photography as a hobby, it’s a lot of fun, thanks for the compliment! On this particular page not so much because they’re pictures of me though.

      Cheers

      • Hey David, Let me know if theres anything I can do to help you in Sci Comm, you’d love the stuff we’re doing with http://www.sciencejunkie.co.uk. Hope youre well, Huw (huw@huwjames.com if you need it)

      • Hi Huw, thanks for the heads up! Yes, Greg came and chatted to us a few weeks back, unfortunately I didn’t get much of a chance to speak with him in the pub after his seminar. I’m flat out at the moment but the stuff you’re doing with extreme sports science looks great, it taps into so many areas that people love hearing about and there’s a lot of science involved too. Cheers!

I’ve looked at your fantastic science blog and congratulate you for being a finalist in the Weblog awards! I was wondering if you’d be interested in being profiled for the newspaper I work for? I’ve included an email address so feel free to contact me using that. Thanks so much and I look forward to speaking with you!

  22. Cool site mate, liked your bluebottle piece. I’m tossing up whether to do an environmental science degree myself but the lure of travel and bodyboarding seems to be winning at the moment! Next year.

I like your idea to understand the world in a scientfic-based view …travelling is the best way to understand the world ..why not coming to Africa and have a look to it.

David As a resident artist of Ulladulla I would love to know the vantage point of your Pigeon House Mountain Photo featuring the ocean in foreground so I can paint on location .Would appreciate your info Elizabeth

    • Hi Elizabeth. It was taken from the end of Pacificana Drive at Sussex Inlet – if you put that into Google Maps it will show you how to get there. The mountain is quite distant from there but it is a gorgeous spot.
